Travel & Lifestyle | Staying connected in the kitchen with TELUS

By now it should come as no surprise that we are big fans of TELUS – from their beautiful stores to the ability to find devices to compliment your life, they have helped to make the lives of Julio & I so much better. But did you know that TELUS also has connected devices to improve your kitchen and culinary skills? We take a few of the latest gadgets for a spin in our connected kitchen experience and help to show you that TELUS is so much more than just amazing mobile devices and customer service.

After falling in love with the connected experience store, I have quickly come to realize that as a brand, TELUS is always looking to help improve my life. Whether I need a new phone (Julio’s birthday is around the corner and it’s one idea I am playing with) or just to have one of their experts sit down to help me understand my own device, I feel as though I matter to them. Which, for those of us who have experienced bad customer service in the past, is such a refreshing change of pace.

Taking this idea to the home seemed to be a natural progression.

“Smart home technology is shifting from early adopters into the mainstream as Canadians begin to realize the tremendous benefits that these devices can bring to them and their families,” said Rob Currie, vice-president of Mobile Devices at TELUS. “Today, we’re seeing basic functionality like controlling lighting or thermostats from our smartphones, but soon, innovations like biometric security systems, intelligent kitchens and home health solutions will make our lives so much safer, healthier and easier that smart home technology will become integral to our digital lifestyles.”

Other key findings in the study include:

  • The greatest perceived benefits of living in a smarter home include saving money and being greener (57 per cent) and increased security or safety (44 per cent).
  • Of those who currently own smart home technology, the most popular devices are smart TVs (65 per cent) and smart thermostats (36 per cent).
  • For those who travel frequently, 56 per cent said they are likely to purchase smart home devices to manage household tasks and provide peace of mind while they are away.”

Thanks to the team at TELUS I was able to get my hands on two of their innovative creative devices for the kitchen and I have come to realize that being connected is so much more than just having a phone in hand. The Anova immersion circulator which is perfect for “Sous Vide” cooking and a Drop scale that provides recipes if you’re don’t have enough of an ingredient, you can use the scale to adapt the entire recipe to match! With just a few minutes to set up the apps on my phone, I was ready to start experimenting in the kitchen and learning about new ways to create food experiences for Julio and I.

Sous Vide was for a long time a cooking technique reserved for high end restaurants and the equipment was expensive / out of range for the day to day Canadian. With the Anova immersion circulator (one of many connected products available from TELUS) allows me to create sous vide dishes that are evenly cooked and high end in nature, all in the comfort of our home!

“You’ve probably heard of sous vide – a cooking technique that allows anyone to produce restaurant quality results. To cook sous vide, you place food in a plastic bag and immerse it in a water bath. You will need to look for the best container for sous vide cooking in addition to getting an immersion circulator, as they are two separate components. Water gently circulates around the food, bringing it to a precise temperature and providing consistently amazing results.

Cooking food in a bag is completely safe and ensures flavorful, juicy meats and vibrant vegetables.”

We’ve cooked chicken, steak and even fresh veggies to perfection with this connected device. It’s as easy as setting it up with the app and letting the Anova immersion circulator do the rest. Plus the app is a great way to find inspiration in adventurous recipes that you might not have tried before. I LOVE to get adventurous in the kitchen and this is by far my favourite new “gadget” to achieve that sense of accomplishment.

In addition to this fancy new way of cooking, I am also looking to keep myself fit and healthy. Conventional scales have been in the kitchen for as long as I can remember, but the Drop scale is turning the idea of having a scale on its head.

I’ll be honest and admit that I’ve never been a huge fan of baking because it’s FAR too precise and doesn’t let me improvise the way cooking does. What I love most about our new Drop scale is that instead of having to run to the store to get ingredients for a recipe in a cook book, I can weigh what I have in the house and search through countless recipes on the app. Don’t have enough sugar? No problem. Resize the recipe to meet you and what you’ve got and not the other way around – GENIUS!
