By now you’ve had a chance to take a look at where you are headed for March Break (click here to see some of my favourite resorts for the whole family) and it’s time to start checking things off your to-do list. In my opinion, and yes I am biased, Canadians are some of the best travelers in the world. We bring with us a love of exploration, a certain unexplained kindness and a sense adventure. But how exactly do you #ProtectYourVacationBliss when it comes to enjoying the vacation itself and that feeling of relaxation we all deserve to bring home with us along with the memories and sun tan?
A vacation is meant to be a disconnect from the business of your day-to-day life and stress. No need to worry about what’s happening back home, or for that matter getting sick in the winter months while you relax in the sun. Make sure that you have made the necessary changes to your home before you leave so that you are not overthinking your decision to leave the heat on or off while you’re away; do your research a few weeks in advance so that you are all set. The experiences and food that you immerse yourself in are meant to be full of fun and laughter! So, whether you’re here or there, as long as you’re having a good time and feeling relaxed, your vacation is working. And let’s be honest, we all work really hard to make the money it costs to take those trips with our friends and family. So how do we avoid these experiences around the world from being ruined by unexpected circumstances?
Firstly, you need to make sure your home is secure. Check that all of the windows and doors lock properly, and make sure they’re all locked tight as you leave. If you’re prone to worrying about whether you left a window open as you’re trying to relax on the beach, consider filming yourself physically locking all of your windows so that you can rewatch it if you need to. Smart Alarms may also be a good idea as they can notify you of anything happening around your house. For example, a smart doorbell can record anyone coming up to your front door, whilst CCTV can actually deter potential burglars from coming near to your house at all. Just make sure you turn it on!
Before I head to any new destination, I like to look up some reviews before I fly out of things like the best cafe warrnambool for example if I was heading there. That way, when I arrive I already have a few options of places to grab food and I know they’re going to be good. I always recommend that you do your research about the country or destination of choice before you leave. For example, Julio & I are headed back to Playa del Carmen in April to celebrate the wedding of two very good friends. And yes while I am bringing a few supplements to ensure that I can keep up with my new fitness regime and workout while I am on vacation (a first for me), I also need to understand that serious concerns in certain destinations around the world can include such things as Hepatitis A and B. Though I’ve never had an issue in Mexico, I do always check the health information about all our travel destinations to be sure that I am prepared well in advance after speaking with our family doctor and credible resources such as the Public Health Agency of Canada and Immunize Canada to ensure w are protected before we go.
Why would I risk the chance of contracting something serious during my time away from it all? Just as important as the sunscreen that I pack or the clothes I am looking forward to packing, the health of my loved ones should be top of mind. It is when I ensure that I am prepared in all of these ways that I get to enjoy some of the most beautiful moments and memories. Because vacation bliss, though limited to a few short weeks a year, should last forever as some of life’s most beautiful moments.
