Once upon a time, I shared the little tidbit of information with Brittany that my new diet did not allow processed carbs. She was horrified. ‘Bitches need pizza!’ she cried. And she’s right. Bitches do need pizza. So when I was offered the chance to try the latest branch of Pizza Union, in the very trendy Dalston, I jumped right at it!
Pizza Union is a place where young, trendy, hipster people come to eat. But it’s also a place where families come to eat and now a place where a slightly older kiwi chick goes to eat. My point is that there is something for everyone there. When you walk in the door, the place feels like you’re entering a bar, complete with house music. There are sharing tables, as well as more personal smaller tables. You order from the counter, and are given a buzzer, which will go off when your food is ready.
We decided to try a different pizza each and share. I like things a bit spicy so we went for two hot pizzas. All of the pizzas are Italian Romano style, as well as being thin and crispy. We chatted and sipped on frozen margarita’s whilst we kept an eye on the buzzer. In a very short space of time, it buzzed and we excitedly approached the counter.
The pizzas are delish. They are flavour heavy, with plenty of cheese and the toppings go right to the edge. All of the things that you want in a pizza. We also shared a salad – you know for balance, and it too was really tasty and light. As we ate and chatted, the restaurant hummed around us. You can get takeaway or delivery as well, but at no point does it feel as though people waiting are crowding the tables whilst they wait or that they are made to feel out of place. The atmosphere is relaxed and there was a family with young kids opposite us who were right at home, next to the hipsters and man buns who shared the table with them.
When we finished up with the pizza, we decided to get another frozen margarita and to share a dessert. This will turn out to be one of the best decisions we have ever made. The dessert consists of a warm dough ring with Nuttella and mascarpone in it. And it is amazing. I am well known for my sweet tooth. I can polish off chocolate like there is no tomorrow, and I have been missing the dessert pizzas that I can get back home in New Zealand. This is right up there with them. It was gooey, sweet and warm and oh my, it was good.
So my pizza loving friends, here is the verdict. This place is well worth finding. There are other London branches, but this one is the newest kid on the block. The service is friendly, the pizza is crispy and fresh, the drinks are tasty and the dessert is gooey, as it should be. What is not to love? This place is also kind on the pocket, so everyone can afford a night out at Pizza Union! I will definitely be back for more pizza good times soon.
