Recently, I decided to pay a visit to Kingston for work. Growing up in Ottawa, I would pass it by on the way to Toronto. But I think I’ve only ever stopped in maybe once or twice to explore, so I didn’t really ever get a sense of the city at all. I clearly had no idea what I was missing out on! Kingston itself has roots embedded deep within Canada’s history, with former trading posts, Fort Frontenac, Queens University, the Royal Military College, and even being the birthplace of the first prime minister of Canada.
For what I thought was just convenience sake, I opted to stay at the Courtyard Kingston Hwy 401/Division Street. Little did I know that location isn’t the best part of this property. This newly renovated hotel has a great location along the 401, allowing for easier access to Kingston’s Waterfront Pathway and Thousand Islands and Leon’s Centre (formerly known as K Rock Centre). Although it’s not located right downtown, I found it super easy to get around for work and to explore.
With a 24 hour fitness centre on site and an indoor pool equipped with an awesome waterslide, it’s a great spot to let loose and get in some fun while you’re on business or vacation. Their on-site restaurant, The Bistro, has a working Starbucks cafe and options for a healthy breakfast or a hearty dinner.
I loved being able to walk outside and shop all of the the outlet stores right out front of the hotel. With only a 10 minute drive right to downtown, we were able to head right into the centre of it all in order to grab some dinner and walk around the waterfront. This might have been my favourite part of Kingston. I had no idea how beautiful it actually is, with all of the cute little shops and restaurants. But what made it so special for me are all of the paths right down by the water.
There are so many things to do in the area with attractions like the Kingston Penitentiary Tours, Fort Henry, 1000 Island Cruises,, Wolfe Island, The Woolen Mill, boat tours and various guided walks – you’re spoiled for choices. Restaurants that have been recommended within the downtown area include Atomica, Aqua Terra, Le Chien Noir, Rudy’s Grill, Battery Bistro, Amadeus Cafe, and of course Carmelinda’s or Pan Chancho for brunch.
I can’t wait to head back to Kingston soon! You can be sure that I’ll be booking in another room at the Courtyard Kingston Hwy 401/Division Street. Now the question is, who’s coming along with me for the adventure?
