You’ll notice I’ve been on the hunt for date night and date ideas lately that are a little “outside the box.” While going to the movies or grabbing dinner is fun (and very important for that special someone) – it’s equally important to find experiences that you can share with your loved one that allow you to connect in new ways. One of my favourite parts of 2019 has been exploring more art and exhibits around the city. I was lucky enough to be invited to Hamilton thanks to my friends at Milli to see the new exhibit at the Art Gallery of Hamilton entitled Milli: A Celebration of Style and I realized it might be one of the best date day ideas you could have this year.
Walking through the exhibit I was reminded of what it felt like the first time fashion and art met for me personally. It was at the Fondation Louis Vuitton and I remember realizing that the world of fashion mirrors that of the art world in more ways that one might first think. Be it a representation of the times in trends, fabrication or design – all the way to showcasing the strength of icons and leaders in the fashion industry. Similarly the exhibit curated by Nolan Bryant allows guests to walk down a chronological expression of the works and life of Milli Gould.
From personal trauma to professional success, the exhibit is one that truly speaks to the resilience, vision and fact that Milli has been ahead of it’s time for decades in both Canada and around the world. Having had the chance to immerse myself in it, I thought immediately of a date day trip to Hamilton that would allow a unique experience, a thought provoking topic, and something a little different that you could enjoy with that special someone too.
“A collection of nearly 50 significant Milli ensembles and artifacts from the private collections of Hamilton and Toronto’s most stylish women will be on display alongside 25 works including painting, photography, prints and sculpture, from the AGH collection. …
Works by fashion creators including Thierry Mugler, Giorgio Armani, Sonia Rykiel, Peter Keppler, Erdem Moralioglu and Milli Gould herself, are displayed alongside works by artists including Shelly Niro, Louise Nevelson, Larry Fink and Robert Motherwell. The showcase also features photographs of pieces collected through the Milli Archive Project — an initiative started in 2015 calling on Canadian women to contribute their favourite Milli garments to build a collection of Canadian style stories.”
