The premise of the column is simple; work with restaurants of all kinds to explore what they have to offer and what makes them unique. In a city like Toronto, the choices are sometimes daunting and the food reviews and critics can be snotty and too complicated for their own good. So why not keep this easy?
Drinks. Appetizer. Main Course. Dessert. All along with a bit of information about what makes them my choice for Daniel’s Dish and why you should try them right away!
Lou Dawg’s, 589 King Street West (647) 347-3294
Recently, the iconic Lou Dawg’s celebrated its fifth birthday and went all out to show the city of Toronto why it is a must for each and every one of us. Although I didn’t have the change to join in on the festivities, I’m excited to head to this Toronto Restaurant icon with Julio sometime soon. I won’t be able to go into the traditional Daniel’s Dish details but I can assure you that the latest additions to the Lou Dawg’s menu are to die for.
Located on King West, not only is this space the epitome of comfort food but it’s the kind of place where they will literally make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in the door. On one of the most recognizable food strips in the city, I can almost 100% guarantee you based on word of mouth alone that this is one restaurant, bar and local hangout you have to try.
So as opposed to telling you which items I loved most on the menu, I’m going switch things up and tell you my food wishlist for my upcoming visit to Lou Dawg’s after their recent birthday.
Drink:
Anything Jack Daniel’s. This iconic whiskey has claimed its stake in this space and the beverage I am looking forward to trying most is the Lou Dawg’s Smoked Lemon Southern Tea. House made smoked lemons have got me intrigued and this beverage sounds like it epitomizes the impending summer season. Paired with classic BBQ and southern dishes, I am sure to need several of these on a hot summer’s day. Bring it on!
Appetizer:
Chicken wings are basically a food group when I’m craving something delicious and not so nutritious. The Slow Smoked Wings had me at home smoked and choice of sauce. I’ve only ever had baked or fried wings and the idea of having slow smoked wings yet again has me intrigued and salivating. Are we seeing a trend here? And this tag line is pretty much priceless “… carefully coated with our special dry rub seasoning, ensuring that you’ll completely forget about breasts.” I love the cheekiness!
Main Course:
When I think southern, I think either smoked or cajun inspired food. After carefully reading through my choices, my eyes, heart and stomach were immediately drawn to The Big Willie Po’ Boy. All inappropriate jokes aside, this dish is a modern twist of a classic po’ boy with double the fish and topped with coleslaw. One of the best ways to enjoy seafood in my opinion is in southern inspired ways. This dish sounds like a must with a side of Angry Loutine. I’ll be working it off for a few days at the gym but it totally sounds worth it!
Dessert:
The choice is clear with The Double Chocolate Brownie. Nuff said. Get in my face.
