Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go! is one of those books that means so much to me. I remember my mom giving it to me when I graduated from Carleton University. It was a touching gesture and still reminds me of that moment when I stood facing the possibilities that were ahead of me. I could never have known what the future held for me, but that book was a pretty good start. Flash forward ten years later, and here I am sharing my life with you all from a blog that I have turned into a career. Looking back on 2017, I have certainly seen many places and experienced many things with you all around the world. One of my absolute favourites being  when the Mexico Tourism Board asked me to visit Mexico City for the first time.

Like many of you, I have experienced more “touristic” destinations of Mexico such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen & the coastal regions. I even had the chance to enjoy a Mexican cruise with Catherine in 2008 (don’t worry Catherine, those photos are safely locked away). So as I sit in the Mexico City airport on my second time to CDMX this year, working on several posts to tell you about even more exciting things to do in my favourite city of 2017, I wanted to share what it was like to visit for the first time earlier this year.

It should be noted that Canada and Mexico are more similar than people realize. Both counties spread far and wide, with many different regions to explore and immerse yourself in. Each of them unique, adding to the mosaic of the country as a whole. Both have incredible food and breathtaking scenery. Both are comprised of beautiful people who are welcoming and kind. And both feel like home when I travel within their boarders.

When the opportunity to visit Mexico City presented itself, it got me excited to see a whole other side of Mexico that I could never have known would quickly win me over. Especially after the recent earthquake the city faced, it is now more important than ever for us as tourists to continue to visit the city which is ready with open arms for the world. I read a fascinating article echoing just that sentiment and it inspired me to share a few of my favourite moments from that trip in particular, in hopes that it inspires you to visit this historic city, people & culture.

After landing at Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México – AICM, I made my way to the historic district. Once settled in the hotel, I made my way to meet my fellow press members before we set off on a whirlwind trip over the following days. From the Museum of Arts, to the street of Coyoacán, the various neighbourhood that combine to make a home for millions of people, to the familiarity of it all, I could never have known the beauty the city held until I saw it for myself. I find myself talking to friends more and more about the city itself lately, and so many of them are intrigued about what it would be like to visit themselves. If I could recommend one destination above all others from our travels this year, this would be it.
