Health & Nutrition| It’s time to have The Talk about heart health

For many Canadians from coast to coast, the reality is that heart attacks are a very real risk. Having learnt some of the facts about heart attacks, I realized that it was time to sit down and have “the talk” with my parents about the symptoms of a heart attack and what to do if one day one of us faces this very scary and very real scenario.

I can understand that no one wants to talk about the possibility of a heart attack – it’s a tough subject to wrap your head around. But that being said, it’s also SO important to understand what to do in case you or your loved ones ever do encounter the symptoms. No one is exempt from having a heart attack; it can unfortunately happen to anyone, regardless of age. I don’t know why we haven’t taken the time to have this conversation before, and so that’s why it’s important we do it now. I didn’t even know this, but if you did defy the odds, cardiac arrest sufferers must be ready for multiple occurrences, and looking after your heart after this near-fatal event has never been more essential. It can be a scary thing to think about, but knowing what you must do in case one ever happens in your family is important, and it can even save a life.

A recent survey by Vision Critical found that while 75 per cent of Canadians feel they know the signs of a heart attack, however only 10 per cent of those were able to correctly identify the correct symptoms when asked. Many become concerned after having a heart attack that their careers and capacity to earn will be stunted by the event. This is why many people look into getting the best critical illness insurance in order to cover them if they undergo a disruptive health condition or experience. Understanding the need for important cover such as this comes in when one has had a family history of such medical problems. These serious issues could even render certain people permanently disabled and unable to return to work. In cases such as this, an insurance provider like Curo Financial might prove helpful for a consultation for the same.

It’s one of the reasons why I recently sat down to catch up with my parents via Skype to hear about the happenings of Ottawa and my family. Over coffee, I was able to tell them about the amazing information available to Canadians around Heart Hearth and to let them know that keeping ASPIRIN ® 81mg tablets in the house are a great way to be prepared in the event of a heart attack.

“A new survey conducted by Vision Critical and commissioned by Bayer Inc. found that 74 per cent of Canadians aged 18-54 agree that their concern for the health of their parents and/or loved ones increase as they age. The survey also found that 34 per cent of Canadians aged 18-54 agree that they find it difficult to discuss their parent(s) and/or loved one’s health and well-being with them. 59 per cent of Canadians aged 35-54 worry about the health of a parent or loved one regularly, and over half of this demographic (51 per cent) agree that they are more concerned about their parent or a loved one’s health than their own”

As Canadians, it is so important to have the talk with our loved ones in order to ensure we’re making the best possible choices for the future.
