Being Home Together Has Taught Me The Following About My Relationship

While it may feel as though we are going into week 432 of stay home measures, I am left feeling as though I may have finally found a grove that works for me. Every day feels a tiny bit more normal, and I am trying to remind myself to not be so hard on myself if I don’t write a novel and run a marathon each day.

Of course, the “hot topic” that a lot of us might not want to talk about is what effects being home 24/7 is having on our relationships. Spending this much time together may be forcing you to rediscover what you like and don’t like about one another. For Julio and I, it’s felt like a whirlwind of emotions to say the least. So I thought I might share some insight on what being home together has taught me about my relationship.

First and foremost, I think the important thing to remember is that every single one of us is dealing with the new normal in our own ways. So your partner or family member is going to go through their emotions in their own way.

For Julio and I it has kind of felt like we just started dating again. From our bathroom habits (the infamous toilet paper over or under debate continues!) to our morning routines, it’s been an experience to learn about one another all over again. While the differences have at times caused friction, it’s the things we love doing together that have made this all easier to accept. The activities we enjoy together, from shows to snacks.

Having never really been quite savvy about streaming up until recently, I’ve sort of been learning about what that means as I go. After setting up our new Roku Premiere, we quickly realized how easy it was to log into our Netflix, Cineplex and yes, our Crunchy Roll account all at once.

During the day when I can be found trying to run every morning, or writing a blog post, Julio is catching up on new episodes of the new Digimon. At night, we are currently re-watching Rupaul’s Drag Race from season one to inspire our upcoming drag content coming to our social media accounts.

Amid the ups and downs, it seems as though we are finding new routines. And the ease of having our Netflix, Crave, Disney + and other streaming services in one system has helped me feel more organized. For those of you who like to stay organized – you’ll know what I mean.

Not to mention reconnecting in the kitchen which has helped us rekindle a love of food like we haven’t had in years. I’m so impressed that Julio is getting so comfortable cooking for us before we cuddle on the couch to stream free TV, live news, sports, music, movies, and more. Our newest favourite is Eater – “Feed your food and restaurant obsession with hundreds of free videos from around the globe. Hosted by a team of passionate food experts, Eater will take you on a journey through food and culture, and keep you craving more.” Yum!

I think what I’m loving most about the things we love together, such as watching shows we’ve been putting off for so long, is the ease of Roku.. I’ll be honest – for a long time I assumed it was just too complicated. But surprisingly, even someone as technologically un-inclined as myself has found it easy to use and navigate.

The fact remains that Julio probably won’t get into my daily fitness. And I probably won’t get into reading graphic novels with him. But the little things that we both love are bringing us (and Canela, who loves to squeeze on the couch with us these days) closer than ever. Next up, Dance Fitness with Jessica. Stay tuned for those BTS moments!

“Now more than ever, people are coming together as a global community and our goal is to make streaming TV a little easier while people shelter in place,” said Rob Holmes, Vice President, Programming and Engagement, Roku.

From the programming being offered, to the products being easy to order to your home, I couldn’t be more impressed with my experiences so far. It’s why I wanted to share in the excitement where I will give one lucky winner a chance to win a Roku Premiere of their very own so stay tuned to the @dothedaniel social media accounts!

From Netflix to Disney +, Crunch Roll to Crave, we’ve got more than enough options to find topics and moments to enjoy together. While the toilet paper debate may still continue, and we may differ on what snacks to enjoy, it’s important to enjoy the things we share and love together. I encourage you to do the same.
