With kids back and forth in between school and no many options to “do” with them I got to thinking about what recipe I could easily cook with my niece and nephew. I remembered a pretzel recipe I learned in high school and thought it would be a bit of a messy activity we could all enjoy. For those of you who want a fun idea to do with kids, or just a delicious salty snack, this is the #DanielsDish for you!

1.5 cups warm water
2.5 Teaspoons of instant or active dry yeast (1 standard packet)
1.5 Teaspoons salt
1 Tablespoon sugar
1 Tablespoon unsalted butter softened
3.5 cups all-purpose flour
coarse salt or coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Baking Soda Bath
1/2 cup (120g) baking soda
9 cups (2,160ml) water
Combine yeast, sugar and water and let proof for ten minutes. Add dry ingredients, mixing in stand mixer, 1 cup at a time. Mix until the dough no longer sticks to the side of the bowl. Remove onto a floured board and knead for 4-5 minutes.
Bring water and baking soda to a boil and CAREFULLY drop shaped pretzels in two at a time for TEN SECONDS. They will rise to the top of the water – remove carefully and set aside. Sprinkle with salt and place on lined or greased baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
